Vetmedin (Pimobendan) β Prescription Heart Medication for Dogs
Vetmedin (pimobendan) is a prescription cardiac medication used in the management of congestive heart failure (CHF) in dogs, including that caused by dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) or mitral valve disease (MVD). It supports heart function by improving cardiac output and reducing the workload on the heart.
π Health Canada Approved Indications: Management of mild, moderate, or severe congestive heart failure in dogs due to atrioventricular valvular insufficiency (AVVI) or dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). A valid veterinary prescription is required.
β Health Canada Approved Indications:
The following indications require a valid veterinary prescription.
- Management of congestive heart failure (CHF) in dogs due to atrioventricular valvular insufficiency (AVVI)
- Management of congestive heart failure (CHF) in dogs due to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM)
π¬ How Vetmedin Works:
Vetmedin contains pimobendan, which acts through two mechanisms: it increases the sensitivity of cardiac muscle to calcium (positive inotrope), helping the heart contract more effectively, and it dilates peripheral blood vessels (vasodilator), reducing the resistance the heart must pump against. This dual action improves cardiac output and supports dogs in heart failure.
